A new breed of dog food is here! Fresh/frozen diets are the newest kind of food to enter the dog world and we are proud to be one of the leaders. Why wouldn’t you want your dog to have a satisfying and nutritious home-cooked meal that is as wholesome as it is delectable? Many of us have cooked for our dogs because we don’t want them eating the kinds of ingredients we read on the labels of most dog food, or because our dogs have suffered from food allergies. Well, now you can step out the kitchen and still feel assured your pup is getting a complete and balanced diet made with the same love and care!
Our Story Our Food Storage Menu How it's made Ingredients Meet Our Farmers Frequently Asked Questions Our Story My husband Ian and I started 'The Good Dog Food Company' in 2008 after we graduated from Le Cordon Bleu college of culinary arts in Las Vegas. Upon finishing school we introduced our first bulldog, Trucker, into the family and soon after began cooking for him. We had heard about the pet food recalls and after some heavy research couldn’t find a food that met our standards. We also felt bad pouring kibble for Trucker every day while we enjoyed great home-cooked meals. Trucker had no complaints about the fresh food he was being fed but Ian and I were concerned he might not be getting the proper balance and correct ratio of nutrients. We had discovered a lot about the pet food industry when we were conducting our research, and were aware that there are definite nutrient guidelines that make a food “complete and balanced.” We started sending our recipes, which we had based off those written by veterinarians, to a lab and found that they did fall short of some of the nutrient levels established by AAFCO (The Association of American Feed Control Officials). The calcium/phosphorus ratio was also off, and we knew this could lead to problems later in Trucker’s life. We thought other people who cooked for their dogs might be in the same boat, and knowing how time consuming it is to cook, we decided to enlist the aid of a doctor of veterinary nutrition and started The Good Dog Food Company! We told our doctor the ingredients we wanted to use and he helped fill in the blanks with what we were lacking. We also began consulting with veterinarians, veterinary nutritionists, dog owners and even a master herbalist, in order to develop a canine cuisine “unmatched in quality, nutritive value, and taste.” We researched hundreds of companies to figure out where we could purchase the absolute best ingredients, because as avid cooks we know a meal is only as good as the ingredients you use to prepare it. Though we began making the food ourselves in a small sub-let kitchen, Good Dog Food is now prepared at The Butcher Shop in Eagle Point, Oregon, a family-owned USDA facility run by Cameron Callahan, a third generation butcher. This has enabled us to share our professionally formulated and vet recommended recipes with even more dogs, and across multiple states. It is our hope to better the health of your dogs as well with an incredibly nutritious diet that will get your companion as excited about mealtimes as you are! These are freshly prepared meals for the family member whose diet may be getting overlooked.
Good Dog Food is made from scratch using only the best human-grade ingredients available and is prepared in a family-owned USDA facility run by a third generation butcher in Eagle Point, Oregon. In our original recipe, Trucker's Mutt-loaf, we use all-natural grass-fed USDA inspected beef sourced from small farms in Oregon. Our future recipes will always have a quality and locally sourced meat such as this as our primary ingredient, and we will always know all the farmers who supply to us. To this we add a variety of organic whole grains, such as brown rice, barley, and bulgur, as well as organic healthy vegetables. Finally, we mix in our unique blend of beneficial nutrients derived from natural sources. The ingredients of this blend include healthful oils, organic flax meal, almond meal, steamed bone meal from domestic cattle, dried kelp, and trace minerals, as well as wild-crafted herbs. As important as what we include in our food is what we don't include. All Good Dog Food is made without by-products, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives and is corn free, wheat free, and soy free. The freshness of our ingredients is what we take the most pride in and we welcome you to research any of our ingredients so you can see how passionate we are about quality.
After the food is prepared it is vacuum-packed and frozen to maintain freshness. It will last indefinitely in your freezer or up to seven days in the refrigerator, once thawed and opened, but it is best to feed Good Dog Food as soon as possible after opening. Food can certainly be re-frozen for later use without compromising quality. We are convinced that the benefits of our freshly-prepared, hand-packed dog food are superior to those of canned food and kibble. With our processes we are able to lock in nutrients and retain freshness in a way that dry and canned foods can't match. We add all of our supplements after the cooking process so the beneficial nutrients are never exposed to heat and we have no need for preservatives because our food is perishable. Menu

Here is where Good Dog Food is made. The Butcher Shop is a USDA facility run by Cameron, a third generation butcher, and his business partner Brian. They have built a reputation based on quality since 1983. We were truly impressed not only with Cam and Brian, but also by the cleanliness of their shop; they even have an open window so customers can see all the meat being processed. http://www.butchershopinc.com/
![]() Brian getting the mixer set up to combine all the ingredients.
![]() Here you can see all the colorful vegetables going into the food, as well as the gently cooked meat.
All mixed and ready for packaging!
Here you can see Brian and Ian getting the massive portioning machine ready for the food. The food is put into the funnel at the top and then the machine is set to release the exact amount of food we put into each bag. Brian is a stickler for cleanliness, as you can see by how pristine the machine is.
The bags are placed over the mouth of the metal tube and when Brian pushes a button, the bag is filled with the specified amount.
After the bags are filled Brian loads them into the chamber vacuum sealer which sucks all the excess air out. This ensures the food remains fresh in the freezer indefinitely, or until you thaw it out to serve. After the food is vacuum packed, two bags go into each container and is frozen in a blast chiller.
Here's Cam loading the containers for delivery. They are all ready except for the labels.
Here are all the ingredients The Good Dog Food Company uses, followed by the links to the websites of the companies we get them from.

Tony B. has been raising cattle for 70 years and prides himself on the cleanliness of his farm. All the cattle are fed the most nutrient and protein dense grass, have access to clean running water, and droppings are cleaned every day. They also have hundreds of acres to graze on. These things may seem like they should be industry standards but unfortunately they aren't, and cows raised on feedlots are not as lucky as Tony's.
Ron Fumasi is another famer who raises cattle for us. Ron's family owned the largest dairy in California and now he and his son run their family farm in Southern Oregno. Their cattle graze on thousands of beautiful hilly acres.
This is Rosemary Lewis, a lovely German farmer located a stone's throw from our butcher in Eagle Point, OR. She and her husband raise our rabbit for dogs with severe allergies, as well as the chickens for Penelope's Grain-free feast. |
